I was stimulated by your fine 'GREEN' May issue. In some fundamental ways cottaging is not good for the environment, yet once we decide to improve on our basic first world consumerism much can be done. Be assured that compared to flying your family to Disney World, taking the family to an Ontario cottage is very green both in measurement and in spirit. Cottage kids may have a real head start on a green future.
Want to make a big step towards a greener future? Consider renting your cottage out for the weeks it would otherwise be empty. Why is this green? Think of this as analogous to car pooling. Once the embedded cost of creating a car or a cottage are committed it is best to fully use that car or cottage to serve the most people possible thereby significantly decreasing the individual environmental costs. If we don't try to use empty cottages then we encourage further development of lakeshore. I am always amazed at how many cottages are empty most of the summer. If a cottage is used for nine weeks a summer rather than three weeks the gain is something like 300% in total efficiency.
So I say renting a cottage rather than building your own is green.
Renting out your cottage to others is green, very green.
